Ian Down is a Ph.D. candidate funded by the Halger Fellowship and the NEXAS Fellowship. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering in 2021. He has interned with Northstar Aerospace, Northrop Grumman Flight Testing, and Northrop Grumman Space Systems. At the LASR Lab, Ian’s research lies at the crossroads between dynamical systems theory, astrodynamics, and control theory. In particular, he focuses on the computation of and motion on the surfaces of quasi-periodic invariant tori, and how they can be applied to various mission design contexts such as formation flying or proximity operations. Beyond research, Ian coaches Texas A&M’s Sailing Race Team, writes and records music, and enjoys traveling to areas that better connect him to nature.
